6. Tour Overview

Jeju Island off the southern coast of Korea is a nature lover’s paradise offering spectacular natural wonders like volcanic craters, impressive lava tubes, waterfalls that fall straight to the ocean and great hiking trails on Korea’s highest mountain, Hallasan.

Blessed with spectacles of nature created by volcanic eruptions, the entire island and its lava tubes were designated as World Natural Heritages by UNESCO in June 2007.

The lava landscape, blending odd-shaped rocks and caves, ponds, volcanic humps and craters, dry lands and great fields of grass is dotted with diverse and rare floral and fauna species.

Sunrise Peak (Seongsan Ilchulbong) is a dramatic volcanic crater which rises majestically from the ocean.  Visitors to the island climb to the peak to enjoy the spectacular sunrise view from the top of a huge bowl-shaped crater set against a background of crystal clear seas.  You may be lucky to also see the famous Jeju women divers (haenyo) who often collect seafood in the seas around here.

Mt. Hallasan, the extinct volcano that rises to 1,950 metres in the centre of the island has a crater at its top.  Mt. Hallasan is home to more than 1,800 species of plants, nearly half of the 4,000 species found in the whole country.  There are several enjoyable walking trails from around 2-5 hours in duration where hikers can enjoy the amazing views down to the coast.

15:00 O’ Sulloc Museum (Green Tea Museum)

The o’sulloc Museum, located on Jeju-do Island near Seogwangdawon, teaches visitors about Korea’s traditional tea culture. The “o” in “o’sulloc”, means to appreciate and enjoy, and it also stands for the origin of sulloc, only sulloc, and of sulloc tea.

The museum, which first opened in September 2001,is widely known in Korea. The entire building takes the shape of a green tea cup. It seeks to harmonize the cultures of the West and East, and past traditions with the modern world.

At the o’sulloc Tea House, not only can visitors enjoy unique o’sulloc teas, but they can relax next to the lotus pond in the indoor garden. The second floor of the building has an observatory, so visitors can enjoy the views of the nearby green tea fields and the surrounding landscape.

17:00 Mt. Sanbangsan and Yongmeori Cliff

Sanbangsan Mountain, shaped like a huge bell, stands tall on the flat planes of the southwestern part of Jeju Island and can be seen from all over the island. Strangely, the mountain looks like it could fit right into the Baengnokdam Lake that’s on top of Hallasan Mountain. In fact there is an old legend that a god in a fit of rage once picked up the peak of Hallasan Mountain and threw it to the west where it became Sanbangsan Mountain.

Sanbangsan Mountain is the result of violent volcanic activity some 700,000 to 800,000 years ago and is in fact a huge body of lava. The cliffs on the southern side of the lava dome are marked with a rich variety of curious formations such as weathering pits and talus scree slopes, some of which are as high as 200m. As its name ‘sanbang’ – literally meaning ‘a cave inside a mountain’ – suggests, this mountain contains a cave, which is located about 150m above sea level and has a spectacular view out over the ocean. Due to its close location to the sea and its high elevation, the peak is often ringed with clouds. The upper slopes of the mountain have their own distinct climatic conditions and are protected for their value for botanical research.

09:00 Meet in the hotel lobby

09:30 Daepo Jusangjeolli

If you follow the farm road 600 m to the southwest from Depo-dong, at the end of the pine tree forest is a cliff. At the base of this cliff is the Jisatgae Coast along with the imposing stone pillars. The Jusangjeolli are stone pillars piled up along the coast and is a designated cultural monument of Jejudo Island. The Jusangjeolli was formed when the lava from Mt.Hallasan erupted into the sea of Jungmun. They are rock pillars shaped like cubes or hexagons of various sizes and almost seem as if stonemasons had carved them out. The administration of the district named them ‘Jisatgae Rocks’ from their old name ‘Jisatgae’. Its 20 m cliff makes it a popular spot for high tide, sea angling. The waves of the high tides crashing into the side of the cliff provide a breathtaking view of the ocean surrounding the pillars.

11:30 Seongeup Folk Village

Located at the foot of Mt. Halla, Seongeup Folk Village has perfectly preserved Korean tradition. With its vast amount of cultural property, this place is designated as a Folk Village.

Many cultural properties such as residential houses, Confucian shrines and schools, ancient government offices, stone statues, millstones (run by horse or ox), fortress ruins, and stone monuments, and intangible cultural assets such as folk plays, native foods, local folk craftsmanship, and the local dialect are handed down to date. The several-hundred-year-old zelkova trees and nettle trees standing in the middle of the village are designated as natural monuments. Wandering around this area, you will feel as if you travled back to the past. It is a popular place for foreigners to experience the unique Korean native culture.

Located on Jeju-do Island, Seongeup Folk Village shows the unique residential culture of the island; the poorly made windscreen stone wall (black lava rock), the straight but curvy Ollae (narrow alley) to block the wind, and the stone statues which have become the prime feature of the landscape. The local black-haired pigs and tongsi (pigsty / restroom) are especially well-known indigenous products. Pork is said to be very nutritious and the region, making the Folk Village a novel experience.

13:00 Lunch

15:00 Darangshi Oreum

On the top, there is a large, deep funnel-shaped crater with a circumference of approximately 1,500m forming an oval from south to north. The northern part is relatively gentle and the depth of the crater is 115m, similar to Baeknok Lake of Mt. Hallasan.

Compared to most oreums with an asymmetrical slant, a cone with regular round contour is rare. In terms of outstanding beauty of balance, it holds the position of queen in Gujwa-eup.

On the ground beside the crater, there are thick weeds and on the top of it, trees are sparse. At the foot of each slope, Japanese cedars grow. On the grassy field, there are Adenophora taquetii and Aster yomena.

It is called Darangshi (Dorangshi, or Dallangshi) because the crater on the peak is round like the moon. The people of Songdang-ri regard it as the pride of the village saying, “Only in Songdang-ri, you can see the full moon rising from the round crater.”

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge provides an ideal spot for walks and for horse riding as well. The sunrise from the crater is magnificent. Also the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak surrounded by bright yellow colored rapeseed flowers in the spring is truly a sight to behold.

One Response to “Highlights of Jeju (3D2N)”

  1. Christina Boentaran says:

We were very thankful for our recent Jeju Island trip with Happymize. Travelling with whole family plus young infant couldn’t be better….
A very very thank you to our guide, JC, he prepared everything carefully to make sure everything is smooth and enjoyable experience for us adults and the baby.

The itinerary was carefully planned to accommodate our interests, and flexibility for us and the infant, we arrived in Jeju feeling relax, and able to enjoy every single moment. I heard its not that easy to explore if we are on our own, now I fully see that. It’s a such great place to visit, JC shows us so much, from the modern places to very nature/cultural places.

And again, we love our food experience which Happymize has plan for us, Happymize had consulted us to small details before we even arrived in Korea to make sure the whole needs will meet our standard. We love to travel, so we are an adventurous people, live seafood on the menu!! Great experience, thanks for that!! =) we experience Jeju famous chicken stew for one of our lunch, it was great, we would never found that place if we go on our own or even big group tour. It’s very local with great taste and atmosphere. Not to forget every meal is included, so nothing to worry during the whole trip, nothing to worry what to order, as we do need some local personalized experience as locals. Happymize has provided us not just a cultural experience, it’s become food culinary experience, from typical home local food to high fine dining experience still with local feeling, great combinations. Would not change a thing, they are perfect!

During our trip to Jeju, the weather was not all good, thankfully for taking such a great organized private tour, thanks to our guide JC, he offer some options due to weather conditions, and we were so happy that everything just went perfectly and at the end we actually see more than planned. Our itinerary was carefully arranged to meet our interests and when we requested one additional visit to a theme park in Jeju, he was very happy to accommodate our request.

The hotel which Happymize chose was also great location, the ocean view just splendid, JC always make sure that we are comfortable during our trip, during the journey, even during our resting time.

It just such a great treat we had from Happymize on our Korea holiday, we really see the different between big group tour to our personalized private tour, and we surely will choose Happymize as our main tour whenever we are in Korea again.
